Check Your SEO Company Is Actually Doing The Work?

How To Check Your SEO Company IS Doing The Work

So, you are paying out lots of hard earned cash and you want to know if your SEO company is actually doing the work!!

Check Your SEO Company

Here is a quick help guide on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and how to check your website yourself. This will enable you to see if have had any ON page optimisation done to your website. Also to see if your website is in dire need of some SEO loving.

The reason I’m doing this is because here at Retriever, we speak to companies day in, day out, who have received or are still receiving terrible SEO to their website.  They are either very unhappy about the poor service they have received or just will not believe that they are wasting a great deal of time and money in unethical search engine optimisation companies.  These companies trust what there being told by them and lack the knowledge to check if the work is actually being completed.

With regards to SEO, it has always been viewed as a dark art of sorts, nobody really knew how websites got highly ranked in Search Engine Result Pages.  If they did, SEO companies were not going to tell you about how they were doing it. Right now I believe we are in a golden age of SEO, where the people that do it right and effectively receive the benefits. The practices that used to get to that treasured No. 1 spot through illegal techniques are all but useless now. No longer is it about how much money you have to spend on spam links to your website. It’s all about the knowledge and ability of a good SEO company that you should take time to look for. Otherwise you may end up paying more in time and money for a service that isn’t what you believe it to be.

What I aim to provide is a check-list of items for you to look at and decide whether or not  you website has been optimised.

On-Page Optimisation.

Title Tags:

Limitations – Keywords must be within 70 characters, most important keywords go first.

How to check-

  • Go into a browser and go to your website.
  • Right click on empty space and click on view page source (or similar)
  • Press Ctrl + F to open the find tool and type ‘title
  • The first piece of code that is highlighted is the line your title tag is on.
  • Look to the right, the title is everything within the “ ” on that line.

Things to remember –

  • Each web page should have a different title! So if your home page is done and not the rest of your site, that’s a lot of optimisation left out and so lots of potential left untouched.
  • Repetition, words already in your title tag and/or URL of your website do not need mentioning.
  • Adding a keyword 10 times on each title tag doesn’t mean you will show up for that keyword. And its seen as SPAMMING.

 Description Tags:

Limitations – Must be up to 160 characters, must be readable by a human not just full of keywords!

How to check –

  • Go into a browser and go to your website.
  • Right click on empty space for and click on view page source
  • Press Ctrl + F to open the find tool and type ‘description
  • The first piece of code that is highlighted is the line your description tag is on.
  • Look to the right, the description is everything within the “ ” on that line.

Things to remember –

  • The most important thing is that this is what describes your web page when it appears in a search result. So to be eye catching and clear about what you do is most important.
  • Include the most important keywords for that page, helps give those keywords more effectiveness.

Page Content:

Limitations – Not as limited as the specific pieces of data mentioned above but you are always only limited by the quality of your content.

How to check – Look at your content on each page and look at the keywords you have placed in your title tags and description tags are relevant to your content. Now this doesn’t mean you place your keywords a million times (about twice in a 100 words, or 2% is good) throughout you content, that’s spamming and you will get penalised in rankings for that. The amount of content needs to be of a good size, generally about 300 words, not just a few paragraphs and this applies to all pages on your website.

Things to remember-

  • Do not spam keywords, this doesn’t work!
  • Each page needs content, quality, relevant content!
  • Quality content matters, this means a nice sized body of quality original text.

Internal Linking:

Check your site has links within the content to other pages on the site. So if you have a SERVICES page, then bullet point the services and have these link to the relevant pages.

Pictures Labelled:

Limitations – Label each picture with a keyword that describes this picture or service/product.

How to check-

  • Go into a browser and go to your website.
  • Right click on empty space and click on view page source (or similar)
  • Press Ctrl + F to open the find tool and type ‘ALT
  • The first piece of code that is highlighted is the line your title tag is on.
  • Look to the right, the ALT TEXT is everything within the “ ” on that line.

Things to remember –

  • Searhc engines cannot see what a pictures is. ALT TEXT labels this picture and helps get it found in result pages.
  • Each picture should be labeled differently with a keyword.

These are the essential and basic factors of on-page optimisation and are the easiest indication to whether you are really getting SEO or not. If these have not been done effectively then your SEO company will surely not bother with everything else that needs doing!

Other ON-page optimisation that should be full optimised even in basic SEO;

  • Header tags – To put correct H1, H2 etc. tags on the correct keywords or headings throughout your website.
  • Internal Linking & External linking, of good quality.
  • NO irrelevant links to your website as back links. A good free tool to look at back links is (www.backlinkwatch.com).
